Quick Facts on Auschwitz
Auschwitz was open from 1940-1945. This camp was open for 5 years. It's full name is Auschwitz Birkenau (aw-sh-wits b-erk-in-ow) The first people who arrived were mainly polish and opposed the Nazis. Later, the camp expanded and ended up holding much more than that! For example it held soviet war prisoners, Jews gypsies, and other people of different races. 1.1 million people died here. At the camp, you would be stripped of all your belongings. Then the Nazis would give you a prison uniform, along with some shoes, which normally would not fit .On the map, Auschwitz is the large dot near road 44. This camp was liberated by the Soviets.
On January 18,1945 some children are leaving the concentration camp after being liberated. Once they got liberated from the concentration camp, they didn't have any family, they were left to fend for themselves. "The Auschwitz-Birkenau prisoners from 29 countries were released to find their own way home."~ unknown author.
